Phenolic Insulation is made from phenol which is a crystalline acidic compound that can be found in coal and wood tar. Phenolic is a thermosetting resin made by condensation of a phenol. Phenolic insulation is created by adding a wet foam mixture to the bottom layer of facing. It will expand to meet the top layer. As it dries, the mixture becomes sticky and adheres to both layers. It gets cooked under pressure, then moved to a secondary oven to cure and harden. During this stage, it becomes bright pink in color.

Phenolic foams were first used in Germany in the early 1940’s, and were introduced in the U.S. in the 1980’s.
